Essential, sculptural, contemporary.
Pininfarina Wave Transition Ethergraf® interprets writing as a design gesture, transforming a simple tool into a design object to be enjoyed every day on your desk.
Made from 3D-printed aluminum, with a new fluid and three-dimensional silhouette, Wave Transition stands out for its perforated body and the balance between visual lightness, technical innovation, and striking presence.
The wooden base, inspired by the world of high-end desk objects, completes the design with a warm and refined material contrast.
Writing instruments with an Ethergraf® tip are not ink pens. They originate from a technique that allows metal to leave a light mark on paper through natural surface oxidation. The line is fine, subtle, similar to a pencil, and designed to last over time.
Their writing is not intended for everyday use such as taking work notes or sequentially signing documents. They are tools that favor slow gestures, sketching, essential annotations, and ideas taking shape. Design objects that inhabit the desk with personality, closer to an aesthetic and design experience than a traditional pen.
Choosing Wave Transition Ethergraf® means choosing a different way of writing: more tactile, quieter, more iconic.
Pininfarina Wave Transition Ethergraf® is born from the meeting of parametric design, formal research, and production innovation. Its profile, softer and more continuous compared to the more rigid geometries of other models in the collection, evokes an idea of fluidity and transformation: a shape that seems to be molded by movement and material.
The body in sintered and 3D-processed aluminum allows for a complex but perfectly balanced geometry, where solids and voids interact to create a refined play of depth, light, and shadow. The result is a visually light but structurally solid instrument, capable of conveying both technical precision and aesthetic sensibility.
The Ethergraf® tip, the distinctive heart of the project, reinterprets an ancient tradition in a contemporary key. It uses neither ink nor refills: the mark arises from the contact between the metal alloy and the paper, leaving an essential, elegant, and durable trace. A more intimate and conscious way of writing, designed for those who appreciate the value of the gesture, not just the function.
Further defining the product's personality is the wooden base, which introduces a warm and natural element in contrast with the technical sophistication of the stylus. It is not just a support, but an integral part of the design: it transforms Wave Transition into a small architectural desk element, to be cherished and displayed.
Integrated into the vision of the Transition series, this creation represents a balance between sustainability, innovation, and advanced formal language. 3D printing allows for more controlled, precise, and responsible production, reducing waste and overproduction, and valuing a new idea of contemporary manufacturing.
Technical note
Common untreated paper is recommended. The presence of glues, mineral fillers, dyes, or additives in the paper can compromise its natural absorption capacity and reduce the oxidation process that occurs upon contact with the Ethergraf® tip.
How does the Ethergraf® tip work? I don't understand how it's possible to write without ink.
The Ethergraf® tip is made of a special metal alloy that, upon contact with paper, generates a slight oxidation of the surface, leaving a fine and permanent mark. It's not ink, it's not graphite: it's the metal itself that writes.
Is the line visible? Is it easy to read?
The line is subtle, similar to that of a light pencil. It is legible but not comparable to an ink pen: it is ideal for small notes, sketches, and drawings, not for intensive use like taking quick notes or signing documents. It is a tool for those who appreciate a slow, personal, and creative writing gesture.
What kind of use is it best suited for?
The Wave Transition Ethergraf® stylus is designed for small notes, sketches, and drawings. It is an evocative and creative tool, not a substitute for an everyday pen. Perfect for those who love to jot down ideas, outline shapes, or simply have a design object on their desk.
What type of paper does it work best on?
It works best on common untreated paper (e.g., standard printer paper, letter paper, sketch paper). Coated, laminated, or mineral additive paper may reduce the visibility of the line.
Does the tip wear out? Do I need to replace it?
No. The Ethergraf® tip does not wear out like a pencil and does not run out like a pen. It is designed to last over time without the need for refills or replacements.
What is the difference compared to the INK version?
The INK version features a classic ballpoint tip with ink, ideal for smooth, immediate daily use. This Ethergraf® version, however, writes without ink, with a more subtle line suitable for sketches and drawings. If you are looking for a desk tool with a unique writing experience, this is the right choice.
