Pininfarina SPACE X Black is an innovative writing instrument, designed for use in space. Made entirely of ultra-light magnesium, with a patented Ethergraf® metal alloy tip, this stylus writes without ink or graphite, making it ideal for extreme conditions such as microgravity. Complete with an elegant ellipsoidal aluminum desk stand, it represents the excellence of Made in Italy design and technology.
Writing instruments with an Ethergraf tip are not ink pens. They are born from an ancient technique that allows the metal to leave a light mark on paper through the natural oxidation of the surface. The stroke is fine, subtle, similar to a pencil, and intended to last over time.
The Pininfarina SPACE X Black is an excellent stylus, created to accompany ISS astronauts in microgravity conditions, where traditional pens and pencils cannot be used. The body is entirely made of ultra-light magnesium, a material known for its mechanical resistance, ideal for space applications.
The patented Ethergraf® tip, forged from a special metal alloy, allows writing through the oxidation of the material on paper, eliminating the need for ink or graphite and preventing dangerous micro-debris in space stations. The elegant design is enhanced by two brushed steel side clips and an exclusive ellipsoidal aluminum stand, ideal for displaying the stylus on your desk.
Was this pen really used in space?
Yes. The Pininfarina SPACE X has been used by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS), including the V.I.T.A. mission of Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli. Ethergraf® technology was chosen because it does not produce dangerous debris (ink, graphite) in microgravity.
How does Ethergraf® technology work? Does it not use ink?
Exactly, no ink and no refills. The Ethergraf® tip is a patented metal alloy that leaves a mark on paper through a natural oxidation process, similar to the ancient silverpoint technique. The stroke is fine and subtle, similar to a pencil, and never runs out.
What type of paper works best?
Untreated common paper (e.g., standard copier paper) is recommended. Coated or treated papers with adhesives, mineral fillers, or dyes may reduce the visibility of the stroke.
What is the difference compared to the Pininfarina Speedform Ethergraf?
Both use Ethergraf® technology, but they are very different products. The SPACE X Black (€130) is made of ultra-light magnesium (15g), has a more essential design, and a strong connection to the space program. The Speedform (€150) is made of 3D sintered aluminum (39g), with an aerodynamic perforated design and a magnetic suspension base. Two design objects with the same soul, two different stories.
Can it replace a normal pen for everyday use?
No. Like all Ethergraf® instruments, it is not designed for signing documents or taking quick notes. It is a design and collection instrument, closer to sketching and poetic annotation. It lives on the desk as an art object.
Is it suitable as a gift for a space, technology, or Italian design enthusiast?
Absolutely. The SPACE X Black combines real history (ISS V.I.T.A. mission), patented technology, aerospace materials, and Made in Italy design. A rare, significant, and memorable gift.
