A sculpture in motion

The Cisitalia 202 holds a unique place in automotive history. It was the first car to enter the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where it was described as a true “sculpture in motion”.

It is also one of the rarest automobiles of its era: today, about 170 examples are known. The limited production is linked to the highly handcrafted nature of its construction.

The body panels were hand-shaped on wooden forms, using a technique derived from the coachbuilding tradition, instead of being produced through industrial processes.

Pininfarina's revolutionary design abandons decorations and the separation between different parts of the body, favoring a continuous, harmonious, and almost monocoque structure.

The thin aluminum body thus appears to be shaped by nature rather than by human hand.
